Infrastructure
Power
Electricity is generated throughout the FSM primarily by diesel
generators. In addition small hydro-electric facilities are in
operation in Kosrae and Pohnpei. Solar power is finding increased
application in the outer islands. The National and State Governments
are actively studying the feasibility of other alternative sources
of energy. Power throughout the FSM is 110-220 volt, 60 cycle.
Standard flat two-pronged plugs are used.
Water
Even though rainfall is plentiful in all four states, for the
most part water is not consistently available from the public
water systems. Residents supplement their supply through the use
of individual rainfall catchments. Steady improvements in the
reliability of the public water supply are continually being made.
Sewer
The four urban centers in the FSM each have public water and sewer
system. Outside the urban centers, the population relies on water
catchments or wells and different forms of septic tank systems.
Water seal and dry composting toilets are enjoying wider usage,
particularly in remote villages and outer islands.
