Position for Assistant Attorney General

Department of Justice Federated States of Micronesia

The Department of Justice of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) accepts applications on an ongoing basis to fill positions as Assistant Attorney General.

The FSM is a developing island nation in the central Pacific, formerly a part of the US Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The legal system of the FSM is based on the U.S. model and English is the official language. The capital of the FSM is in Palikir, on the tropical island of Pohnpei. The FSM Attorney General's Office is a small office with seven attorneys.

Attorneys in the Division of Litigation are responsible for investigating allegations of violations of national law, determining which cases to prosecute and bringing civil and criminal cases on behalf of the national government, as well as defending any claims brought against the government. Areas of national law which may be the subject of litigation include fisheries, elections, use of public funds and contract matters.

Attorneys in the Division of Law are responsible for the legislative, transactional, and advisory activities of the executive branch of government, including the drafting of bills and regulations, negotiation of international treaties, agreements and conventions, and the provision of legal advice on a wide variety of matters. Attorneys also serve as counsel to various agencies and boards of the national government and to the Office of the President.

A degree in law and admission to practice law in any jurisdiction and at least three years of experience is required. The salary will fall within a range of USD $38,000 to $39,999 per year (U.S. tax exempt), depending on experience. Additional benefits include a housing allowance, round trip airfare to and from the FSM and shipment of household goods. A two year contract is offered. Positions may require some domestic and international travel.
