Handover Ceremony of the Improvement of the Weno Harbor Project

Palikir, Pohnpei (Department of Foreign Affairs): January 31, 2008 - January 25, 2008-President Mori returns from Chuuk where he participated in the Hand Over Ceremony of the recently completed Japanese Grant Aid project, the Improvement of the Weno Harbor. The Handover ceremony took place on 23 January 2008 at the project site in Chuuk. The project broke ground in April 2007 and was completed in December of 2007. The scope of work put into the Harbor improvement were the construction of wave dissipating blocks, the construction of a revetment wall, the reconstruction of the superstructure and concrete curb, replacement of the rubber fenders and the removal of the submerged vessel "MV Nien Feioch."

The project was carried out by the contractor Penta Ocean Construction Co., Ltd and was overseen by the Consultant, ECOH Corporation.

In the hand over ceremony President Mori received the project from Mr. Omura, Charge' d' affaires of the Embassy of Japan and then turned the project over to the State of Chuuk through Governor Simina. President Mori expressed his deep appreciation to the Japanese Government for the needed project and was pleased with the cooperation involved in the project from all stakeholders and Governments. He expressed his appreciation for the profound relationship between Japan and the FSM and noted the invaluable assistance to the FSM in the area of infrastructure development.

Over the years, Japan, through its Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) schemes have constructed roads, docks, an electric power plant, and a passenger cargo vessel for the FSM. Since concluding the Weno Harbor project, the next project in the pipeline from Japan is the Improvement of the Pohnpei International Airport.
