Acting President Hosts Reception for Congress

PALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM Information Service): March 20, 1997 - FSM Acting President Jacob Nena hosted a reception Tuesday night, March 18, at the Across the Street Restaurant in Ninseitamw, Kolonia Town, for members of the FSM Congress who are in Pohnpei for the Fifth Special Session which convened March 10, 1997.

In his brief remarks, Nena thanked the Senators for accepting his invitation so there can be continued informal exchange of views and information between the Legislative, Executive and Judiciary Branches of the FSM Government which will pave the way to a better working relationship. And it was indeed proven beneficial to all from the informal exchanges between the solons and other officials.

The Acting President and members of his Cabinet and staff also donated some of the dishes along with those provided by the caterers. National Planner, Bermin Weilbacher, strumming his four-string ukulele sang an old but familiar tune which had lyrics in Chomorrow, Yapese, Chuukese, Pohnpeian, Kosraean, English and he added a Japanese verse to which the crowd joined in singing.

With an atmosphere of goodwill, Senator Peter M. Christian, the only remaining member of the First FSM Congress, and now chairman of the Committee on Transportation and Communications, on behalf of the speaker and members announced and invited the Acting President and other officials present for a reciprocal reception on the evening of March 19, 1997.

The iceberg that seem insurmountable at the time is easily resolved through social functions and informal gatherings as receptions.
