Congress expresses condolences to Japan Government

Palikir, Pohnpei (FSM Information Services): March 25, 2011 - Palikir, POHNPEI (FSM Information Services): On March 21, 2011, FSM Congress, on the first day of the sixth special session adopted a resolution expressing the sincere sadness and condolences to the people of Japan for the suffering and destruction caused by the earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011.

WHEREAS, on March 11, 2011 a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck off the coast of the city of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture in the Tohoku region of Japan; and

WHEREAS, the earthquake triggered tsunami waves measuring more than 30 feet which struck along the Tohoku region's coastline and reached as far as 6 miles inland; and

WHEREAS, the nation of Japan has tragically lost over 7,000 of its dear citizens to the earthquake and tsunami and has had thousands more injured; and

WHEREAS, the earthquake and tsunami wrought extensive damage to infrastructure in the region, including damage and disruption to essential needs such as water services and electricity production; and

WHEREAS, the Sixteenth Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia recognizes the great efforts made by the Government of Japan and the people of Japan to mitigate and contain the damage following this disaster and wishes all possible luck and fortuity upon their continuing mitigation and recovery efforts; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Sixteenth Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia, Sixth Special Session, 2011, that the Congress express its sincere sadness and condolences to the people of Japan for the suffering and destruction caused by the earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this resolution be provided to the President of the Federated States of Micronesia and to the Japanese Embassy.
