Senior Police Officer and Department of Justice Attorney Attend Annual Security Conference

Suva, FIJI (FSM Information Services): June 10, 2010 - During the first week of June, the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat hosted an annual Security Conference attended by Captain Takasy Reim of the FSM National Police and John Mahan, Assistant Attorney General of the FSM Department of Justice. The 3 day conference in Suva, Fiji, was well attended by the Pacific Island Countries, the UN and international law enforcement agencies. Discussed were matters of national and international concern including: money laundering, human trafficking, drug abuse, corruption and crimes involving fisheries.

The conference highlighted the importance of government transparency especially in the areas of fisheries and banking. And, it also put a face on the problem of domestic violence and child abuse. "It was sobering information," said Mahan, and "I hope that the alliances Captain Reim and I made during our time in Fiji, will bear fruit and stop some of the terrible crimes occurring elsewhere in the Pacific from reaching the shores of the FSM."
