Pohnpei and Zhejiang Province Enters in Friendly Relations

PALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM Information Service): June 23, 1997 - Pohnpei Governor Del Pangelinan headed a delegation which visited Zhejiang Province, Peoples Republic of China (PRC) during the month of May 1997, according to a release from the Governor's Office.

High ranking officials from Zhejiang Province and Pohnpei State expressed their willingness in developing and establishing friendly relations between their respective governments resulting in a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) which was signed by Pohnpei Governor Del Pangelinan and Deputy Governor of Zhejiang Province, His Excellency Liu Xirong.

The MOU reaffirms the great potential for cooperation between the two governments and that both parties agreed to cooperate in Long Line Fishing activities between Pohnpei State Fisheries Corporation and Zhejiang International Fisheries Corporation, acting on behalf of their respective governments.

Zhejiang Provincial Government and Pohnpei State also agreed to explore and cooperate in export-oriented processing and manufacturing industries, agriculture, coastal agriculture and other areas of development.

The MOU urges strengthened contacts between the two governments, with the Foreign Affairs Department of the Government of Zhejiang and the Bureau of Public and Governmental Relations of Pohnpei State Government acting on behalf of their governments.

Other members of the delegation include Honorable Quirino I. Mendiola, Chairman, Legislature's Committee on Judiciary and Governmental Operations and Simon Kihleng, Deputy Chief Bureau of Public and Governmental Relations.
