Official Special Election Results in Pohnpei

PALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM Information Service): July 10, 1997 - Candidate Resio S. Moses has been declared winner of the Congressional Special Election held on July 2,1997, in Pohnpei State, to fill an At-Large vacant seat for Pohnpei.

The declaration was made by the FSM National Election Director, Max Mallarme, on July 8, 1997.

Senator-elect Resio Moses is the current FSM's Ambassador to the United Nations, a position he held for a year is and will soon be vacating as a result of the election. Moses was appointed by the former President Bailey Olter in 1996 to take over (from) former Ambassador Yosiwo P. George who resigned and became an At-Large Senator from the State of Kosrae in May 1996.

Moses is not unfamiliar to the integricies of legislative branch roles, having been a member of the House of representative in the Congress of Micronesia during the Trust Territory Government era.

Moses prior experiences include that of a District Administrator at the district level and as Executive Officer at the Trust Territory Headquarters levels. Since the establishment of the FSM Government on May 10, 1979, Moses served two four-year terms as Governor of Pohnpei. He was the President of the FSM Constitutional Convention in 1990.

Moses is expected to assume his duties as FSM Senator later this month when Congress convene it First Special Session for the 10th Congress in Weno, Chuuk, on July 28, 1997.
