FSM Invited To Submit Candidates For US Service Academies

Palikir, Pohnpei (Dept. of Foreign Affairs): October 17, 2008 - Information & Eligibility Requirements for potential candidates to be considered for the

U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) and the U.S. Military Academy (USMA):

Eligibility Requirements
FSM citizen
Unmarried
17 years old (and as of July 1, 2009 will not have passed 23rd birthday)
If female, must not be pregnant
No legal obligation to support children or other dependents

Application Package
Once you have completed all application requirements, please send your complete application package to your state governor's office for their official submission by the noted deadline(s) to the following address:

The following materials are required in order to fairly evaluate your application:

  • A completed "Service Academy Nomination Application"
  • Official, sealed transcript from all high schools and colleges attended
  • SAT or ACT test result
  • TOEFL test result
  • 3 letters of recommendation from people who know you well (One of which must be from your State Governor; Recommendations from family members are not permitted)
  • Essay: in approximately 500 typed words, please explain why you are seeking this nomination

Deadlines
December 17, 2008 for USAFA applications
January 16, 2009 for USNA and USMA applications

Selection Process
Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of academic performance, intelligence, leadership ability, moral character, adequacy of preparation and commitment to attend a service academy.

You may be contacted for an interview. Candidates will be informed whether or not they will be receiving a nomination by May 2009.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you meet any special criteria required for admission by the academy or academies of choice. You may find out more information about each of the academies at the following websites: Army: www.usma.edu; Navy: www.usna.edu; Air Force: www.usafa.af.mil.

Please note that the acceptance of an appointment to a United States service academy commits an applicant to five years of service to his or her government after graduation.
