Certification and Declaration of Results of the FSM Congress Special Election

Palikir, Pohnpei (FSM Information Services): October 22, 2009 - The National Election Director, Mr. Kimeuo Kimiuo, has written to President Manny Mori to certify the election results from the October 20, 2009 FSM Congress Special Election held in Pohnpei. In his letter, Director Kimiuo congratulated and commended the candidates and their families, the leadership of Pohnpei State, and most especially, the eligible voters and citizen for their understanding of the democratic principles and process as evidenced by their actions on Election Day, which ran "very smooth and peaceful".

At 9:45 A.M., October 22, 2009, the Pohnpei/FSM National Election Commissioner transmitted the certification and the final unofficial results of the election to the National Election Director. After reviewing the documents thoroughly, Director Kimiuo concurred with the Commissioner's findings and certified the declaration of election results for the FSM Congress Special Election for the At Large Seat for Pohnpei State and declared candidate Peter M. Christian as the winning candidate who received the plurality of votes.

The final vote tally had Peter Christian winning 5,888 votes (44%), to Esmond Moses with 3,832 (28%), Mohner Esiel with 3,325 (25%), and Joseph Phillip with 453 (3%), giving Peter Christian the lead by 2,056 votes. As soon as all the election district numbers become available for release, they will be posted to the FSM Public Information Office website at www.fsmpio.fm for viewing.
