World Diabetes Day in FSM

Palikir, Pohnpei (FSM Information Services): November 12, 2009 - Vice President Alik has signed a Presidential Declaration for President Manny Mori, declaring November 14th, 2009 Diabetes Day in the FSM. This stems from the United Nations and the International Diabetes Federation selecting this day to celebrate World Diabetes Day.

The proclamation states that the theme of World Diabetes Day from 2009-2013 is "Diabetes Education and Prevention" and that diabetes is a preventable and controllable disease. It stresses that public health education and awareness programs are amongst the most important strategies in diabetes prevention and control and the President urges all citizens to think more about how to prevent and control diabetes, and to participate in this year's World Diabetes Day activities. Each State Department of Health is holding separate activities focused on prevention and control.

In addition to activities on the 14th, the Departments of Health Services in the states will be screening for diabetes and hypertension and giving updates for the immunization of the flu at various locations. Please contact your state Department of Health for specific information on activities, locations and times.
