President Urusemal concludes state visits in Pohnpei

Palikir, POHNPEI (FSM Information Service): December 9, 2004 - President Joseph J. Urusemal wrapped up his State Visit to the Federation by meeting with the Leadership of Pohnpei State Government and a separate meeting with the Private Sector.

On November 29, President Urusemal and members of his Cabinet met with the leadership of Pohnpei State Government in the Legislature Chambers where issues of discussion included:

  • Amended Compact updates;

  • Progress of the "High Growth Strategy" adopted during FSM's 3rd Economic Summit;

  • Foreign Economic Assistance updates; and

  • The Tuna Commission Headquarters, Palau Micronesia Air and Prior Service Trust Fund.

The President noted that the various challenges surrounding these development issues and called on the collective efforts of the states' and national leadership to attain the expected level of development.

The following day, the State Visit continued with the Private Sector whose list of concerns included the following:

  • Downsizing governments
  • Tax
  • Foreign Investment/Immigration procedure
  • FSM Health Insurance
  • Amended Compact opportunities
  • Tuna Commission
  • Updates on: Mobil fuels, secured transactions and bankruptcies

Primary among the listed concerns of the private sector was the issue of tax, which took over a good portion of their meeting.
